“Israel has never been so unpopular in the United States”: even Trump distances himself from Netanyahu.

Guest of Club Le Figaro, Romuald Sciora, director of the United States Political and Geostrategic Observatory at IRIS, drew up a particularly harsh observation on the situation of Israel and its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. According to him, Donald Trump is gradually distancing himself from the man who was for a long time his main ally in the Middle East. The analyst puts forward three explanations: Trump’s annoyance with his image as a “Netanyahu puppet” in the American media, the political and legal difficulties of the Israeli leader, but above all the collapse of Israel’s image within American public opinion. “Israel has never been so unpopular in the United States,” says Romuald Sciora, referring to a growing distrust not only in American opinion in general, but also within a part of the American Jewish community. He also points out that a majority of young Americans now have an extremely critical view of the Jewish state.
For the researcher, this development explains why Donald Trump “let go of Israel on this one”. He believes that the American president no longer sees any political cost in distancing himself from an ally who has become cumbersome and increasingly isolated on the international scene. While Washington would probably continue to support Israel in the event of a direct attack, Romuald Sciora questions the solidity of this alliance in the long term. “I’m not sure that in 10, 15 or 20 years, the United States will still be there to protect the Jewish state,” he said, describing a country whose main supporter himself appears to be showing signs of weariness.
