Algeria signs strategic agreement with Europe to launch the SoutH2 green hydrogen corridor for 2030
Europe and Algeria launch SoutH2, a strategic green hydrogen corridor project intended to connect the two regions by 2030. This 3,300 km pipeline could transport up to 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year to Europe, as part of the REPowerEU plan to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
According to the Energy News website, the players involved include Sonatrach and Sonelgaz for production in Algeria, and European companies like VNG in Germany, Snam and SeaCorridor in Italy, as well as Verbund Green Hydrogen in Austria for distribution. Feasibility studies include technical and environmental analyzes to convert existing gas infrastructure and install renewable energy parks in Algeria.
With a budget estimated at 10 billion euros, SoutH2 represents a major energy and geopolitical challenge for Europe, strengthening cooperation with Algeria and diversifying its energy supplies. The SoutH2 corridor could ultimately include other European countries such as France, thus strengthening the interconnection of energy networks within the EU.
