Australia: Anti-Semitic attack leaves Bondi Beach in mourning, Muslim disarms shooter

“The evil that was unleashed in Bondi is inconceivable,” declared Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, denouncing a “heinous act of anti-Semitism”. Australian police have confirmed that the shootings that occurred on Sunday, December 14 near Bondi Beach, in Sydney, are part of a terrorist attack targeting “the Jewish community of Sydney”. The results show at least 11 dead and 29 injured, several of whom are in critical condition. A twelfth death concerns one of the suspected shooters, shot dead by the police. The attack occurred near Bondi Park, where an event called “Chanukah by the Sea”, organized to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah, had just started.
At the heart of this chaos, a 43-year-old Muslim man, Ahmed al-Ahmad, intervened to neutralize one of the attackers. According to Australian media, he managed to disarm and subdue the shooter, an act hailed as heroic on social networks. “For us, he is a hero, one hundred percent,” testified his cousin, Mustafa al-Ahmad. His courageous gesture is widely seen as a symbol of solidarity and humanity in the face of violence motivated by anti-Semitic hatred.
