Australia: Pig heads desecrate Muslim cemetery after Bondi attack

Pig heads were thrown on graves at Al Nur Islamic cemetery in Sydney’s west, hours after the anti-Semitic Bondi Beach attack targeting Jewish families gathered for Hanukkah. An act of desecration widely denounced as an attempt at reprisals and stoking hatred. Ahmad Hraichie, a Muslim undertaker, condemned a “cowardly and stupid” move that “only fuels anger, pain and division”. Recalling that cemeteries are places of dignity and respect, he denounced symbolic violence which “leads neither to peace nor to justice”.
New South Wales police confirmed an investigation and called for calm, stressing that no form of retaliation would be tolerated. For its part, the Australian Muslim community reaffirmed its unequivocal condemnation of the anti-Semitic attack in Bondi, recalling that any violence against civilians is contrary to the principles of Islam. In a climate of high tensions, the authorities and religious leaders are calling for restraint and the refusal of amalgamations, in order to avoid a spiral of hatred between communities.
