Berlin: focus on Muslim heritage at the Museum of European Cultures
Since 2023, the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin has undertaken an innovative project aimed at enriching the visibility of Muslim heritage within its collections. Scheduled until 2025, this effort is part of a research program dedicated to promoting cultural diversity and inclusion.
The ambition is to incorporate more objects and stories reflecting Europe’s Muslim cultures, for an accurate representation of the continent’s historical diversity. “Our goal is to deconstruct stereotypes and offer a nuanced and rich vision,” explains Katharina Volkmann, project manager.
In partnership with researchers, artists and members of Muslim communities, the museum develops interactive exhibitions inviting the public to discover the impact of Muslim cultures on European history.
Conferences and workshops, designed to encourage intercultural dialogue, will complete this project. They will serve as a platform to explore historical connections and exchanges between Muslim and European cultures. This project highlights the importance of cultural visibility of Islam in museums. At a time when questions of identity and multiculturalism occupy a central place in public debate, this initiative contributes to the promotion of tolerance and mutual understanding.
