Centenary of the Fazl Mosque in London: a mosque financed in 1924 by women who decided to sell their jewelry
October 19, 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Fazl Mosque, the first mosque built in London. This historic event was initiated by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II, spiritual leader of the Ahmadiyya Islamic community, known for advocating non-violence, during his visit to the United Kingdom in 1924.
A historic first
Unlike previous failed attempts, such as the London Mosque Fund, the construction of the Fazl Mosque was made possible primarily through the contributions of women from the Ahmadiyya community. Their exemplary dedication pushed them to sell their jewelry to finance the project, making this mosque a symbol of sacrifice and faith.
To celebrate this centenary, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the United Kingdom hosted a special reception at the Fazl Mosque. It was attended by personalities from various backgrounds, including journalists, academics and politicians. A guided tour allowed guests to learn about the history of the mosque and the evolution of the Ahmadiyya community in the United Kingdom. A detailed exhibition also retraced the significant moments of this journey.
Tributes and testimonies
The Reverend Jonathan Sedgwick, Archdeacon of Southwark, praised the mosque’s contribution to London’s diversity. He insisted on the importance of unity and mutual aid for a better future. Fleur Anderson, MP for Putney, highlighted the impact of members of the community, particularly the Lajna Imaillah women’s section, whose sacrifices in building the mosque are a source of inspiration.
Hazrat Amirul Momineen, the current spiritual leader of the Ahmadiyya Islamic Community expressed his gratitude to God for this momentous occasion. He recalled that events around mosques are not just worldly, but spiritual, emphasizing the importance of these places as sanctuaries where believers gather to worship Allah. He also warned against growing materialism that alienates people from spiritual values, emphasizing the fundamental role of mosques in promoting moral and spiritual development.
The centenary of the Fazl Mosque bears witness to a century of spiritual dedication and community involvement. More than just a building, this mosque embodies the values of unity, faith and peace, while playing a crucial role in promoting peace and diversity in London and beyond.
