De Villepin recognizes massacres comparable to Oradour-sur-Glane during the Algerian War

Invited Sunday on LCI, former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin recognized that certain crimes committed by the French army in Algeria were “comparable” to the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane perpetrated by the Nazis in 1944.
Asked about the words of journalist Jean-Michel Aphatie evoking French “Oradour-sur-Glane in Algeria”, Villepin considered that “looking at the story”. “Obviously, there have been horrible massacres. General Bugeaud, as much as others, have committed vile plans in Algeria, “he said, citing the smoking of Algerian civilians locked up in caves.
Oradour-sur-Glane, a village of Haute-Vienne, was the scene of a massacre of 643 civilians by an SS division on June 10, 1944.
Returning to his personal attachment to this place, located near a village in his family, Villepin insisted: “I measure the horror that this represents. Yes, it’s comparable. He also denounced the 2005 law glorifying the positive role of colonization, described as “insult”. For Villepin, “recognizing the suffering of others is not repentance, but an act of humanity”. Like Jacques Chirac’s speech on the Vel d’Hiv roundup, he calls for a “shared recognition path” with Algeria.
