Death of Jimmy Carter: The American Muslim community salutes “a friend of Muslims and defender of the Palestinian cause”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) paid tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who died this Friday at the age of 100, hailing him as “a defender of just causes” and “a friend of the Muslim community ”.
In a solemn statement, Nihad Awad, executive director of CAIR, particularly highlighted Carter’s commitment to the Palestinian cause. He notably recalled the courage of the former president who, despite strong criticism, had maintained his positions during the publication of his work “Palestine: Peace, not apartheid”.
39th President of the United States (1977-1981), Jimmy Carter marked his mandate with a foreign policy focused on human rights and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. His decisive role in the Camp David Accords in 1978, establishing peace between Egypt and Israel, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
A respected figure within the American Muslim community, Jimmy Carter was distinguished by his balanced approach to Middle Eastern issues and his humanist vision of international relations. His commitment to human rights and his constant search for diplomatic solutions marked not only his presidency, but also his post-presidential years at the Carter Center.
“Carter embodied a model of humanity,” Awad said, expressing hope that his legacy will inspire a new generation of political leaders. This statement from CAIR, the leading Muslim civil rights organization in the United States, demonstrates Carter’s lasting impact on American Muslim communities.
