Emmanuel Macron announces that France will recognize the state of Palestine in September

Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that France will officially recognize the state of Palestine in September, during the United Nations General Assembly. In a message published on X, the Head of State presented this decision as faithful to “the historical commitment of France for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East”. He called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, the release of hostages and massive humanitarian aid.
The French president also underlined the need to demilitize Hamas, to secure Gaza and to guarantee the viability of a future Palestinian State, which will have to recognize Israel and participate in the stability of the region. “There is no alternative,” he said.
This announcement comes in a context of increasing pressure on the international community, while the Gaza conflict has already killed more than 100,000 people. The civilian population, faced with intensive bombings for months, also faces large -scale famine, qualified as “catastrophic” by several humanitarian agencies.
Several European countries, including Spain, Norway and Ireland, have recognized the Palestinian state in recent months. Critical voices, especially on the left, welcomed the French decision, while denouncing a too distant calendar. “Why wait until September?”, Reacted the deputy LFI Thomas Portes on LCI, who calls for immediate sanctions against Israel to “stop the genocide”.
True to its historical commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine.
I will make the solemn announcement to the United Nations General Assembly, next September. … pic.twitter.com/7yqlkqofwc
