Has My Ghusl Been Compromised?

January 21, 2004

Question

Asalam-o-Alakum

my queation is about ‘ghusal’ “bath”, there was smell in the water with which I used to take ghusal, i think that this will be because of the tank(as we never washed the tank since it was made, because of several reasons), and we use water of this tank for only taking ‘ghusal’. when one day i we saw in the tank there was a dead Lizard in the water. now my question is that “if all of my previous ghusals would be false? ” or what should I do(now we’ve washed the tank) .

May Allah guide us all the right way

Allah Hafiz.

Answer

Islam does not hold anyone accountable for anything they were unaware of even after they become aware of it, unless it is actually wrong and the person continues with it.  In your stated circumstance you are clear from any fault, as you did not realize the matter even though there was an indicative odor from the tank.  This was simply an oversight.  Moreover, the water in itself did not become impure as a result of the dead lizard being in the water.  As for whether you have fulfilled the requirements of Ghus’l (i.e. ritual bath) then it should be clear from the explanation that indeed you have.  Even if the water had been impure for some other reason and you were not aware of it your Ghus’l would still be valid.  Trust that the Lord is Merciful and never burdens a person with more than he/she can handle and rest assured that your purification rites and prayers are, insha’Allah, accepted.

I hope I have clarified the issue.

God knows best.
