In Istanbul, the Algerian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf talks with his Iranian counterpart

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met, yesterday in Istanbul, his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. The interview was held on the sidelines of the 51st session of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in a context of military climbing in the Middle East.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the two officials discussed “the developments of the assault which continues against Iran and its repercussions on peace and security in the region”. Attaf reiterated Algeria’s position and affirmed Algiers’s commitment, as a non -permanent member of the Security Council, to defend a political and peaceful approach.

In a distinct press release published in Algiers, the MAE expressed the “lively concern” of Algeria following American strikes against Iranian nuclear installations. He was emphasized that “in a moment marked by an international consensus on the search for means to appease tensions in the region, the Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran experienced, last night, developments of extreme gravity accentuating climbing with American strikes against Iranian nuclear installations”. The ministry calls to return to the way of dialogue without delay, claiming that only a peaceful solution, based on the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, can spare the region more tragedies.

Algeria, faithful to its tradition of non-alignment and its legacy of fighting interference, refuses the logics of domination and preventive war. By denouncing the American strikes and by dialoguing directly with Iran, Algiers makes an independent voice heard, which puts on diplomacy, international legality and respect for peoples to block climbing.
