In London, Mayor Sadiq Khan inaugurates Ramadan lights in the heart of the city

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khaninaugurated the Ramadan lights in the center of the British capital on Friday. Installed in the West End, they will remain lit throughout the month of Ramadan. The illuminations display the message “Happy Ramadan”. For the occasion, several London buildings were also lit in green, a color often associated with Islam.

“A symbol of the city that we are”

Present at the ceremony, Sadiq Khan welcomed an initiative which, according to him, reflects the identity of London. “It is a strong symbol of the city that we are: inclusive, welcoming and proud to celebrate all of our communities,” he said. On social networks, London Town Hall recalled that these lights have become an annual event, highlighting the cultural and religious diversity of the capital. The Ramadan lights are financed by the Aziz Foundationa foundation that supports British Muslims through scholarships and educational programs. For those responsible, these illuminations send a positive message: that of a Great Britain that is open and respectful of all beliefs.

As in previous years, the initiative sparked critical reactions, particularly from some conservative commentators. Already last year, Christmas decorations in London were criticized for not displaying the message “Happy Christmas”. Despite the controversies, the lights of Ramadan continue to dominate the London landscape. On March 18, the light message will change to “Happy Eid”, to mark the end of the month of Ramadan.
