In The Tribune India, academic Shahabuddin Quraishi denounces: “The Taliban are betraying Islam and Afghan women”

In an article published on October 28, 20242 in the daily newspaper The Tribune IndiaShahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi, a respected political and intellectual figure in India, denounces the worrying regression of women’s rights in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, emphasizing that their interpretation of Islam is far from its true teachings. Since the Taliban came to power in August 2021, women’s rights have deteriorated, despite initial promises of openness. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban, announced: “ We will allow women to work and study (…) within the framework of Islam. » However, reality imposes severe restrictions, including a ban on education for girls over 12, numerous work bans, and the requirement that women travel only accompanied by a male guardian.

Shahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi contrasts this situation with the principles of equality promoted by Islam. He cites clear Quranic verses, such as: “ And women have rights over men similar to those of men over women. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:228), and “JHe never fails to reward each of you for any work you do, male or female – you are equal to one another.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:195). Other verses emphasize the dignity of women and the condemnation of demeaning practices, such as: “ When one of them gives birth to a daughter, his face darkens with overwhelming grief. (Surah An-Nahl 16:58-59), and “Believing men and women are helpers, supporters, friends and protectors of one another” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:71).

These references show that Islam, from its origins, has granted women fundamental rights, including personal freedom and financial independence. Far from being subordinates, women are described as equals to men, both in daily and spiritual life. Shahabuddin Yaqoob concludes that the Taliban regime betrays these Islamic values by imposing oppressive and dehumanizing practices. By persisting on this path, the Taliban are only accentuating Afghanistan’s international isolation and plunging the country into a tragic regression.
