In Tunisia, “bread of the rich, bread of the poor”… and above all shortages
Subject to repeated shortages, bread is a symbol of the financial crisis that is shaking the country. Freshly appointed by the president as head of government, Ahmed Hachani must quickly find solutions so that this basic food product is once again available in sufficient quantities.
The new head of government, Ahmed Hachani, just appointed by the president, received on Tuesday August 8 the Minister of Commerce, Kalthoum Ben Rejeb, to inform her of the urgency of ensuring “a normal supply of bread through coordination with the various stakeholders”, reports the independent news site Business News.
For several weeks, Tunisians lived to the rhythm of shortages of bread, an essential food in homes. Endless queues have formed in front of the so-called “traditional” bakeries, that is to say those which produce baguettes made from state-subsidized flour and sold at very reduced prices. In a short article published on Tuesday August 8, the state newspaper The Press note that “bakeries located in popular neighborhoods are limited to three or even two batches during the day and then lower the curtain at the beginning of the afternoon”due to subsidized flour supply quotas.
