Is Leaving Islam a Sin?

January 6, 2004

Question

Hello I am a Christian that has a Muslim girlfriend, although I have to be converted to be able to marry her, I was thinking if she can convert as a Christian. She has mentioned as she would like to apparently it is a SIN according to the book. I was just wondering is this true or is there some possible solution.

Answer

With all due respect, the very nature of your relationship is against Islamic norms of courtship.  A girlfriend/boyfriend relationship, even if both “partners” are Muslim, is forbidden in Islam.  Although this was not part of your question I feel that it is an integral issue you both should consider.  As it relates to conversion, it would depend on the sincerity of the individual believing the new faith he or she converted into as being the Truth.  Thus, if a person is honestly convinced Islam is not the true religion of God then the Mercy of the Almighty shall take affect and the Judgment is His.  That person will have to justify his or her action before the Almighty and will face the consequences if the Lord so wills.  Please keep in mind that any religious affiliation due to maintaining some sort of social status quo lacks the very ingredients of faith to have any significance in the first place. You asked for some solution and therefore I’ll oblige.  First, the relationship should not continue as it is.  You may work towards getting married but the boyfriend girlfriend part of your relationship must come to a halt.  Contact with one another would have to become limited and being alone together should be completely avoided.  I also suggest that the both of you get acquainted with the basics of Islam. Then if you feel that Islam is attractive to you, convert.  God willing you will both become mature in spirituality and religious matters.  This will help you raise your kids with strong religious foundations that will protect them throughout their lives.  I pray that you make the right decisions for yourself and her and your children; now and in the future.

I hope I have clarified the issue.

God knows best.
