Jean-Paul Vesco, archbishop of Algiers and Algerian nationality will participate in the conclave to elect the new pope
Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, archbishop of Algiers since 2021, dismissed the idea of being elected Pope during the next conclave, in which he will participate. “Quite frankly, no. I think it takes a number of qualities that I don’t think I have “he said on Monday evening on BFMTV. “It’s clear enough for me”he added, believing that ” Other figures will emerge very quickly in the coming days ”. Cardinal for only five months, Mgr Vesco was appointed in January 2025 member of the Dicastery for interreligious dialogue by Pope Francis. Very attached to the Islamo-Christian dialogue, he became archbishop of Algiers in 2021, after having been bishop of Oran from 2012. He obtained Algerian nationality in 2023, on decree of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Addressing the prospect of the conclave, he said he wanted “Arriving virgin from any preconceived idea”stressing that “ It never happens in the same way from one conclave to another ”. And conclude: “I also know that the Holy Spirit plays its role, and it must be let it play. »»
