Jesus in the Koran: a major prophet

Jesus, spiritual bridge between Islam and Christianity

Jesus, Issa, occupies a central place in Islam. The Quran mentions him 35 times: 27 times by name and 8 times as the Messiah. His birth was a miracle, and his mother Mary, Maryam, is one of the most honored women in the Quran. God says: “The Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, His word which He sent to Mary, and a spirit from Him” (surah 4, verse 171).

For Muslims, Jesus is not God, but an exceptional prophet, bearer of a message of mercy, truth and spiritual demands. From the beginnings of Islam, this respect was translated into action: Christians recognized Mohammed’s mission, and persecuted Muslims found refuge with a Christian king of Abyssinia. And in the Muslim consciousness there remains a strong hope: the return of Jesus at the end of time, as a sign of justice, peace and restored truth.
