Leicester: a mosque vandalized, the Peace Center calls for dialogue rather than fear (video)

Leicester Police are investigating after a series of damage to a Muslim community centre, a house and a bus in the Thurnby Lodge area. On Sunday evening, CCTV cameras filmed two individuals throwing traffic cones at an interior door of the Peace Centerwhich houses a mosque, a community space and a weekly food distribution service.
While law enforcement officials say the actions were not targeted, those in charge of the center expressed their deep sadness. “Being attacked in this way really hurts,” says Numayar Gazi, spokesperson for the center. “We are fully integrated into this neighborhood that we love. Faced with this, we simply feel rejected. » Recognizing that no worshiper or volunteer was injured, Mr. Gazi nevertheless invites the perpetrators to come and chat over a hot drink in order to understand their actions. He evokes a “premeditated” act, recalling that a similar incident – throwing stones and bottles – had already targeted the center in May 2024. Twelve years after its opening, the Peace Center says it wants to maintain its commitment to living together despite these repeated attacks.
A climate of normalized hostility that worries Muslim communities
This incident, which could quickly be classified as a simple act of delinquency, is nevertheless part of a broader climate of tensions targeting Muslim institutions in the United Kingdom. Even when not officially considered “targeted,” these recurring attacks create a latent feeling of insecurity among the faithful. The Peace Center, anchored in the local social fabric thanks to its community actions and its food bank, despite itself becomes the mirror of a deeper phenomenon: the trivialization of hostile acts against Muslim places of worship. The center’s response — reaching out rather than enclosing itself in distrust — demonstrates a desire to preserve dialogue in a context where it is increasingly weakened.
