Lens: a 15-year-old high school student loses a hand after a grenade explosion

A 15-year-old high school student was seriously injured in Lens, in Pas-de-Calais, during the high school mobilization. The teenager had his forearm torn off. Faced with the seriousness of the facts, Marine Tondelier, national secretary of the Ecologists and elected official for Pas-de-Calais, announced Monday that she was suspending her maternity leave. She will visit the department’s high school students on Tuesday morning before joining the demonstrators in Paris in the afternoon. Marine Tondelier affirms, while specifying that this information remains “to be confirmed”, that the 15-year-old would not have been on the front line or picking up a grenade.

The environmental leader denounces the increase in “irreversible injuries to minors” since the start of the high school movement and calls for a reform of the French doctrine of maintaining order. She also calls on parents and elected officials to mobilize to guarantee young people their right to demonstrate and considers as a “serious political mistake” the remarks of the Minister of the Interior affirming that no particular instructions for restraint had been given to the police. “We, Environmentalists, have no problem condemning the violence. Systematically. Wherever they come from,” she also said.
