Liverpool star Mohamed Salah denounces UEFA hypocrisy on the death of the “Palestinian Palestinian” in Gaza

This Saturday, the Liverpool star striker publicly denounced UEFA after his tribute to Suleiman al-Obeid, nicknamed the “Palestinian Pale”, killed on August 6. In its press release, the European body greeted a “talent carrying hope” … but without ever named the assassins. “Can you tell us how, where and why is he dead?” », Small Salah. Published this morning, his message sparked a huge buzz: more than 61 million views in a few hours (see tweet below).

Born in Gaza, Suleiman al-Obeid was one of the greatest Palestinian footballers of his generation. An elegant and creative player, he had marked the national selection by his talent and inspired thousands of young people in the besieged enclave. Despite restrictions, poverty and successive wars, he had embodied on the ground a hope of dignity and freedom.

Obsessed with its commercial contracts and the management of its turnover, UEFA has long trampled on the values of sport and has made itself an accomplice, by its silence, of the crimes committed in Gaza. Suleiman al-Obeid was killed by Israeli strikes while waiting for humanitarian aid in the south of the enclave.

This courageous speech by Mohamed Salah contrasts with the constant cowardice of major sports instances. UEFA, a European football machine, embodies the total commodification of this sport, reduced to a product of ultraliberalism where image and profit take precedence over justice and ethics. Prisoner of her sponsors and her financial interests, she betrays a little more the spirit of the game and the fraternity that she claims to defend. In a minimum of moral coherence, she should immediately banish Israeli clubs from all European competitions, as she did for Russia.
