London: Ramadan lights again illuminate Coventry Street
For the third consecutive year, Coventry Street, an emblematic artery connecting Piccadilly Circus to Leicester Square in the heart of the West End Londonian, is about to put on his light clothes to celebrate Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer and sharing for the Muslim community. From February 28 to April 6, 2025, a spectacular installation of more than 30,000 LEDs inspired by Muslim geometric patterns and celestial symbols of Ramadan will illuminate this historic street, popular with tourists and Londonians, every evening from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.
This initiative, carried by the Aziz Foundation, is not limited to a simple light device. An entertainment program enriches the event with in particular an interactive installation on Leicester Square, an IFTAR gastronomic course and a participatory project of lanterns to make yourself. Note that the illuminations will evolve on March 30, passing from the message “Happy Ramadan” to “Joyeux Eid”, thus marking the end of the month of Ramadan.
“We are proud to perpetuate this tradition for the third year, celebrating the rich diversity of London and the spirit of Ramadan,” said Rahima Aziz Bem, administrator of the Aziz Foundation. A tradition inaugurated in 2023 by the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, which is now an integral part of the cultural landscape of the British capital.
This celebration reflects a broader dynamic of recognition and inclusion of the British Muslim community, estimated at nearly 3.9 million people. Beyond its festive dimension, the event testifies to a significant evolution in the representation of minority cultures at the heart of the great Western metropolises. These illuminations, in the same way as Christmas decorations, mark a turning point in the way London celebrates its cultural and religious diversity, serving as a model for other European capitals. Access to illuminations is free.
