Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola: “What we see in Gaza is so painful, it hurts all of my body”
The emotion was at its height on Monday in Manchester. Honored by the University of the City for its exceptional contribution, Pep Guardiola transformed this ceremony into a rostrum to denounce the horror that is played out in Gaza. Manchester City coach, visibly upset, spoke to evoke the humanitarian disaster which ravages the Palestinian enclave, pounded without respite by the Israeli army. “What we see in Gaza is so painful, it hurts my whole body,” he launched, wet eyes, before reminding that it was not ideology, but humanity. “It is not a question of who is right. It is a matter of love of life.”
In a poignant statement, he warned: “Maybe we can see 4-year-old children to die, and to say that it is not our business. But the next 4 or 5 years old children will be ours.” Faced with the feeling of helplessness, Guardiola delivered a simple but impactful fable: that of a bird that tries to turn off a fire with a few drops of water. “He knows he will not stop fire. But he refuses to remain inactive.” A way of calling everyone to “do their part”, even minimal, faced with indifference and chaos. A rare discourse reminiscent that it is still possible to say no.
