Mayor Sadiq Khan celebrates a giant iftar in the heart of London
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khanpraised Monday evening “the power of being Muslim” during a giant iftar organized on Trafalgar Squarebilled as the largest in the Western world. In front of thousands of participants who came to break the Ramadan fast, the Labor councilor denounced “forces of division and darkness” seeking to “frighten Muslims so that they are less visible”. Conversely, he highlighted “the joy of being Muslim and British”.
Located in the heart of LondonTrafalgar Square is one of the most iconic squares in the country. Dominated by Nelson’s Column, it regularly hosts public events, demonstrations and cultural celebrations, symbolizing a central space for gathering and expression. Organized by the NGO Open Iftarthe event brought together the faithful but also participants of different faiths – Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs and non-believers – illustrating, according to the mayor, a spirit of “multicultural alliance”.
Sadiq Khan also stressed that “being a Muslim in 2026 remains difficult”, while welcoming the growing visibility of Ramadan in London, particularly with the illuminations installed for four years in the center of the capital. The initiative is part of a broader desire to make London an open and inclusive city, where major religious festivals find their place in the public space. For several years, these collective iftars have multiplied, transforming emblematic places into spaces for sharing and dialogue.
