Mélenchon to Barrot: “It took you two years to recognize the State of Palestine”

The debate devoted to French foreign policy gave rise to a lively exchange Tuesday evening on France 2 between the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrotand the leader of La France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchonagainst a backdrop of war in Gaza and respect for international law. Jean-Luc Mélenchon questioned France’s diplomatic inaction towards Israel, accusing the government of having “never summoned Mr. Netanyahu’s ambassador” despite the humanitarian situation in Gaza. He also criticized the two-year delay before the French decision to recognize the State of Palestine, calling the late choice “an error.”

The head of diplomacy responded by invoking the continuity of the French position, stressing that no previous government, “neither right nor left”, had recognized the Palestinian state earlier. A justification rejected by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who denounced a “horror” which lasted two years and continued according to him due to non-compliance with the ceasefire. Despite their differences, the two officials converged on one point, affirming that international law must constitute a structuring force in relations between States.
