Moselle: The mosque of the desecrated hospital, the CFCM denounces a hateful and Islamophobic act
The French Council for Muslim worship (CFCM) reiterated its “deep indignation” on Wednesday after the desecration of the hospital mosque, discovered on May 25 in the morning, and calls for a firm response from the authorities in the face of what it describes as a “hateful and Islamophobic attack”. The mosque, closed for work for several months, has been found in a state of devastation: pulled door, destroyed furniture, corans thrown on the ground and degraded, swastika and racist slogans tagged on the walls. The CFCM evokes an act of “incredible violence” which directly aims “the freedom of worship guaranteed by the Republic”.
The Council recalls that this attack does not constitute an isolated case, but is part of a worrying series of anti -Muslim acts identified in recent months across the country. He underlines the urgency of a collective start to defend the republican values of tolerance, respect and fraternity, and calls the media, institutions and the whole of civil society not to trivialize such acts. In his new press release, the representative body of Muslims in France calls for a national mobilization against the rise of Islamophobia. “Silence or indifference in the face of such acts are no longer acceptable”warns the CFCM, which asks the authorities of “Do everything to identify, challenge and judge the authors”.
The CFCM welcomes the brands of solidarity expressed locally but also calls for “concrete gestures”, in particular the rapid reopening of the mosque, the sustainable security of the place and moral and material support to the faithful of the town. Finally, the CFCM enjoins the government to strengthen the protection measures around Muslim places of worship, in an climate which it deems “alarming”, and calls for all the religious leaders to increased vigilance.
