Nazem Kadri, first Muslim hockey star, traces his journey in a book

Nazem Kadri, emblematic figure of the National Hockey League (NHL) and player for the Calgary Flames (Canadian professional hockey franchise), is much more than just an athlete. His journey, which he traces in his book Dreamer, My Life on the Edgeresonates as a story of perseverance, passion and the fight against adversity.

Born in London, Ontario (Canada), Kadri discovered a passion for hockey at a very young age, despite a lack of diversity and the trials of racism.

The son of Lebanese immigrants, Nazem Kadri grew up relying on his roots and his family to confront the racist insults that, unfortunately, came from all sides as he progressed in his career. During the Stanley Cup playoffs with the Colorado Avalanche, he even received death threats.

But instead of giving up, Kadri redoubled his efforts, going so far as to bring the Stanley Cup back to his hometown in 2022 to honor London’s Muslim community. He thus became the first Muslim to win the famous trophy of the National Hockey League (NHL), which brings together ice hockey franchises from Canada and the United States.

This powerful moment took place in a local mosque, where he was able to offer a moment of joy and pride to young people, as well as to a boy who, like him, had been a victim of racism.

In 2020, determined to make a difference, Kadri co-founded the Hockey Diversity Alliance to combat racism and open the world of hockey to marginalized communities. His dream? A more inclusive sport for the next generation of young players, Muslim or not, including his own daughter.

Nazem Kadri was able to transform challenges into strength and embody a model for younger generations. Despite obstacles and Islamophobic smear campaigns, he shined on the ice, becoming one of the most respected players in the NHL.

His impact today goes far beyond the ice rinks: his commitment to social justice and equality has, in fact, marked the world of hockey. His book looks back on his humble beginnings and the sacrifices made by his family so that he could follow his dream. Each victory obtained, each milestone reached, Nazem Kadri did it with unwavering determination, wishing to be a source of inspiration for young people, in particular those from minorities who are often under-represented in sport.
