New York takes a historic step: May 2025 declared “month of international Muslim heritage”
In a significant advance for cultural diversity, the New York State Senate has just adopted resolution 257, formalizing May 2025 as “month of international Muslim heritage”. This initiative, welcomed by the New York American-Islamic Relations Council (Cair-NY), marks a turning point in the recognition of the Muslim contribution to American society.
“This resolution embodies the New York opening spirit and offers a precious lever against prejudices,” said AFAF Nasher, executive director of Cair-Dy enthusiastically. She underlines the importance of this celebration to “amplify American Muslim voices in the face of persistent discrimination”.
The initiative aims to highlight the millennial heritage of Islam through:
- The exploration of its authentic history
- The valuation of striking figures
- Recognition of societal contributions
- Strengthening intercultural dialogue
CAIR-NY, the main organization of defense of Muslim civil rights in the United States, now calls on communities to mobilize to make this month a highlight of sharing and mutual understanding. This decision illustrates a broader approach to protect civil liberties and empowerment of the American Muslim community, testifying to the continuous commitment of New York for a more equitable society.
