Nigeria: Christian saves Muslim during deadly attack in Jos

On March 29, 2026, Palm Sunday, unidentified gunmen carried out an attack in Angwan Rukuba community, Jos, Plateau State, killing at least 28 people. The shooting caused panic, pushing many residents to flee in haste. Among the survivors, Sa’idu Murtala, a fruit seller, recounted how a Christian man saved his life. When the gunfire broke out in the middle of the evening, the latter quickly brought him into his home and hid him in his wife’s bedroom, where he spent the night in safety. “He did everything to reassure me”confided Murtala, still marked by the violence of the attack. The next day, his host contacted his family so that he could return safely.
This gesture of interreligious solidarity contrasts with the climate of tension. Murtala sees this as a strong lesson: “In Islam as in Christianity, there is good and bad. If everyone was like this man, the world would be at peace. » His friend Hassan, present at the time of the events, however, remains nowhere to be found.
Faced with the situation, the authorities established a 48-hour curfew. The state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, called for calm and assured that security forces were mobilized to find the perpetrators of the attack. This drama recalls a significant precedent: in 2018, The imam Abubakar Abdullahi had protected more than 300 Christians in a mosque in the same region, illustrating, here too, the strength of gestures of brotherhood at the heart of the violence.
