Nissa Wargadipura, founder of an ecological Islamic boarding school receives the Food Heroes 2024 award

Nissa Wargadipura, pioneer of agroecology in Indonesia and founder of the Ath-Thaariq Islamic boarding school, was recognized by the FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) with the Food Heroes 2024 award. , presented on October 16 on World Food Day in Rome, honors its efforts for sustainable agriculture and equitable access to healthy food.

Since 2008, Ath-Thaariq, based in Garut (West Java), has taught students environmentally friendly agricultural techniques, combining food self-sufficiency and Islamic values. On a plot of one hectare, the students grow vegetables, fruits and fish, an approach inspired by Nissa Wargadipura’s “vision of green Islam”, which combines ecology and spirituality.

Indonesia for Humanity (IKA), which has supported Nissa Wargadipura since 2011, welcomes its role in tackling climate change and food security, emphasizing that its model shows the potential of women to advance sustainable solutions for their communities . This award reinforces the importance of its initiatives and inspires other communities to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, essential for the future of the planet.
