Norway: the historic celebration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, in the presence of King Harald V
Sovereign of a Norway which, like Italy and Spain, is honored to have officially recognized the State of Palestine last May, Harald V, 87 years old, relied on crutches to celebrate in a collected atmosphere, and under good escort, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
Friday, November 29, the majestic Oslo Cathedral was the center of a solemn and moving commemoration, marked by the seal of the horrible tragedy which has struck the Gaza enclave and its martyred population for more than a year.
A particularly painful but extraordinarily unifying commemoration, the presence of the King of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon, 51, Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, several ambassadors, parliamentarians and members of the Palestinian community made history.
Oslo Cathedral resonated with poignant prayers for Palestine, as well as the speech, with vibrant pro-Palestinian overtones, delivered by the Prime Minister and chairman of the Labor Party. “ Norway stands with the Palestinian people in their aspirations for freedom and dignity, and we will continue to support solutions that promote lasting peace between people and the creation of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital “, proclaimed Jonas Gar Støre with a beautiful Nordic fervor that we would like to see elsewhere break the ice of shameful inertia.
Remember that it was the UN which, in 1977, declared November 29 to be the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This day was chosen in memory of November 29, 1947, the date on which the two-state solution was voted for.
