Ontario in Canada: a first halal food bank open to anyone in a precarious situation
An innovative initiative is enriching the charitable landscape of London, a city of 400,000 inhabitants located in the province of Ontario in Canada. At 589 Wonderland Road North, a new type of food bank has opened its doors, specially designed to respect the dietary precepts of the Muslim community.
This unique structure is the result of natural evolution. What began as a modest food distribution program within the Caring Canadians Society has grown, under the leadership of Amna Saleem, into a self-sustaining establishment. “The scale of the needs justified the creation of a dedicated entity,” explains the founder.
Success is already there: each month, more than 260 people pass through the doors of the establishment, and last week, no less than 67 new registrations were recorded. With strong local partnerships, notably with the Islamic Center of Southwestern Ontario, the establishment recently acquired specific equipment for the preservation of halal foods.
A sign of this success, a move to larger premises is planned for next month. If the establishment responds primarily to the needs of people observing Muslim dietary requirements, it also welcomes anyone in a precarious situation, thus illustrating an inclusive vision of solidarity.
