Palestinian photojournalist Saher Alghorra awarded the Prix Bayeux

Palestinian photojournalist Saher Alghorra, a contributor to Zuma Press, won the 1st photo prize for war correspondents in France on Saturday at the 32nd edition of the Bayeux Prize, a major international journalism event marked this year by the wars in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan. Created in 1994, the Bayeux Prize honors journalists who cover conflicts around the world. Organized each year in the Normandy town of Bayeux (Calvados), it recognizes the best reports produced in a war zone, saluting the courage, rigor and humanity of those who testify at the risk of their lives.
His award-winning reporting, “Trapped in Gaza: Between Fire and Famine”testifies to life under siege in the Gaza Strip, where the author is still imprisoned. Already winner of the young reporter prize in 2023, Saher Alghorra this time delivers a series of moving images on the distress of Palestinian civilians, trapped between bombings and famine. His work, praised by the jury, highlights a reality often suppressed by the information war.
Beyond artistic recognition, this distinction has a strong symbolic and political significance. By rewarding a Palestinian photographer still trapped in Gaza, the Bayeux Prize jury recalls the importance of lived testimony, that which is born in pain, fear and resistance. The photos of Alghorra, taken at the heart of destruction, refuse neutrality: they speak of hunger, mourning, and survival in a world that looks away. In a context where more than 220 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the start of the genocide, this award sounds like a collective tribute to a decimated profession. It highlights the courage of these Palestinian reporters who, often without protection or means, continue to document the horror at the risk of their lives. By this price, The Bayeux Award finally recognizes that, in besieged Gaza, photojournalism is not just a profession: it is an act of truth, an ultimate form of resistance.
