Portugal: Inauguration of a new mosque in Sintra

The Muslim community of Sintra, a seaside resort near Lisbon, inaugurated a new worship space in Cacém on November 2, bringing together dozens of faithful for a moment of prayer and celebration. The ceremony, marked by the presence of representatives of the Islamic communities of the region and local elected officials, was an opportunity for the vice-president of the Islamic Association of Sintra, Sori Djalo, to underline the importance of this space for Muslims in the municipality.

The association, which began raising funds in the first year of the pandemic, managed to transform an old place into a welcoming and peaceful space for the faithful. The municipality also supports the association in the search for land for a future construction project.

The day ended with a lunch bringing together the Muslims of Sintra and their guests, in a spirit of sharing and conviviality.

The inauguration of the Cacém mosque marks an important milestone for the Muslim community of Sintra, providing the faithful with a place of gathering, prayer and peace. This new space demonstrates the solidarity and commitment of the community in the region, with the support of local authorities. As expansion plans continue, this mosque embodies a step forward in integrating and strengthening ties between Sintra’s diverse communities, while meeting the spiritual needs of Muslims in the municipality.
