Prayer Timings Coordinated With Fast Timings

March 1, 2005

Question

Can you please clarify further as to what does beginning of night mean? Does this mean the time when maghrib prayer timing starts. And how does starting time of fast is coordinated with fajar time. Can you please elaborate in detail with due references as the general practice is to start and end the fast with the azan of fajar and maghrib respectively.

Answer

The “night” is referring to when the sun sets. This means that when the Athan is announced for Maghrib prayers one should break their fast. The same goes for when you start the fast. With the Athan for the Fajr prayer you must start the fast; that means no eating when Fajr starts.

I hope I clarified the issue.

God knows best.
