Questions About Tilawat-e-Quran

July 5, 2005 by Admin

Question

Assalamualaykum,

I have several questions about prostration for Tilawat-e- Quran:

1. I am trying to memorize Sura Alaq so I need to repeat the last verse couple of times. Do I need to prostrate for the last verse each time I recite?

2. If I listen to prostration verse on cassette player, do I need to prostrate?

3. If I read a translation of a prostration verse ( in English, German), do I need to Prostrate?

Answer

In my opinion, the answer to the first question is a ‘no’ and the rest are ‘yes’. The prostration during recitation are indicative of a live interaction between ourselves and our Creator. At instances, where the Qur’an commands us to bow down or prostrate, we do not wait for being in prayers. We just do it. Of course, there are instances where you are listening but not concentrating on the meaning and implication of the words. One such instance is while the person is memorizing the Qur’an. Also, when listening is only of the nature of enjoyment and rhythm of a given recitation, one may not even notice or have the convenience of prostration. Nevertheless, when one is truly reciting or listening to a recitation, with the intent of hearing the Almighty talk, then every command (in whatever language) or suggestion or even implication should be responded to. The language of recitation is also not significant here. Furthermore, this act may also be performed at any other instance, where the person reciting wants to express his extreme gratitude or his awe or his recognition of the grandeur of the Almighty.
