Regarding Supererogatory Rak`ahs in Jum`ah prayers.

April 16, 2004

Question

Us-salaamu Alaykum You have written: “However, it should once again be stressed that the number of these supererogatory Rak`ahs is not fixed. For instance, offering ten supererogatory Rak`ahs with the Jum`ah prayers is not supported by historical sources.” How many supererogatory Rak`ahs with the Jum`ah prayers is supported by historical sources?

Thanks.

Jazzakallah khairun

Answer

The number of Rak`ahs offered with the Jum`ah prayer has been quite variable. It ranges from two to four.
