Removing Pubic Hair Through Waxing

September 15, 2004

Question

I want to ask that can a female take the help of another female for the removal of her pubic hair. I want to clarify that as in the case of waxing it is very difficult for one to remove her own pubic hair.the removal through hair removing creams and lotions is not satisfactory and is irritating, by waxing one feel more clean and Allah likes cleanliness, so can a female ask another female to help her remove her pubic hair through waxing.  I’ll be thankfull if u reply to my answer.

Thank you.

Answer

The ‘awrah (i.e. private parts) is something Muslims must take great care in guarding.  Part of the guidance of Islam is to instill hayaa (i.e. decorum of sexuality) in its followers.  This concept is not to be taken lightly because the religion is very strict and emphatic on this point.  Of course, there are times when there is a purpose behind showing different body parts to others, within certain contexts.  An example of this would be when seeing a doctor for a check up or some other purpose.  As for removing hair from certain areas with the help of professionals then it should be seen as permissible due to their context.  However, asking a friend to help with such a procedure would be imprudent.  There are certain boundaries we may not want to cross with people who are close to us.  Hence, a professional helping you maintain your hygiene is not objectionable.  Even though the Shari`ah (i.e. Islamic Law) does not prohibit it, yet in our opinion, it would be unseemly for a person to get such help.  Keep in mind that we do not hold our personal opinions to be the standard for right and wrong for all individuals.

I hope I have clarified the issue.

God knows best.
