Rings in Islam

January 5, 2004

Question

Can women wear rings? Especially wedding rings without wearing gloves to cover them.

Answer

Indeed, women are allowed to wear rings and other sorts of jewelry.  This is not prohibited by the Shari’ah (i.e. Islamic Law).  Wedding rings are not a part of any Islamic ritual, however, are completely acceptable as a cultural practice.  It does not go against Islam to wear them.  As a side note, I would like to mention that wearing gloves is not a requirement of the Shari’ah for either sex, men or women.  It has nothing to do with the code of modesty Islam promotes.

I hope I have clarified the issue.

God knows best.
