Ronaldo’s hotel in Morocco was never transformed into a refuge

Poison ! Following the violent earthquake which hit Morocco and caused at least 2,000 deaths, several media outlets, including Le Figaro, published articles announcing that Cristiano Ronaldo had transformed his hotel into a refuge. “The Pestana CR7 Marrakech hotel has become a place of refuge for people affected by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake,” says another publication.

Why is this wrong? It appears that the information originated in an article in the Spanish sports media Marca, under the title: “Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel on the outskirts of Marrakech serves as a refuge after the earthquake in Morocco”. But the term “refuge” has surely been misunderstood. When reading the Marca article, it appears that the newspaper was based on the testimony of a Spanish tourist on television. The young woman says that following the earthquake, she booked a return flight to Spain and turned to a more modern district of Marrakech, less affected by the collapses. She says she slept in the street before getting a room that became available in Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel.

Contacted by Désintox, the Pestana CR7 hotel indicates that the hotel has in no way been transformed into a reception center for the victims. “This is false information. All the customers we have at the moment have made a reservation normally.” And for the moment, Cristiano Ronaldo has not made any announcement in this regard.
