Saudi Arabia: Riyadh metro welcomes nearly 2 million passengers in its first week

The new Riyadh Metro, recently inaugurated at the end of November 2024, recorded a resounding success with almost 2 million passengers transported during its first week of operation. This ambitious project, which demonstrates the rapid modernization of infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, aims to relieve road traffic congestion in the capital.

Made up of six lines covering a network of 176 kilometers, the metro now facilitates the daily travel of Riyadh residents. “It’s a life-changer for many residents,” said Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, Minister of Transport. “The journeys are faster and more comfortable.”

This project is part of the Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the Saudi economy and reduce its dependence on oil. By increasing the appeal of public transport, the kingdom also hopes to reduce the carbon footprint of its large cities.

Initial feedback from users is largely positive, although some have expressed concerns about flow management during peak hours. The challenge for the authorities will be to maintain a high quality service in the face of attendance which is only expected to increase over time.
