Saudi Arabia: The 2025 Biennial of Islamic Arts in Jeddah, between faith and artistic creation
The Jeddah Biennial of Islamic Arts 2025, scheduled for January 25 to May 25, promises a deep exploration of the concept of faith in a modern world. Organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation at the Hajj West Terminal, this edition brings together contemporary works and historical pieces to highlight the diversity of expressions of the Islamic faith.
The theme of this biennial, And everything in betweenis inspired by a Koranic verse evoking the beauty of divine creation. The exhibition will be orchestrated by artistic directors Julian Rabi, Amin Jaffer and Abdul Rahman Azzam, who aim to reach a wide audience by juxtaposing historical works and contemporary creations.
Divided into seven sections, the biennial offers varied experiences. Among these, Al Bidaya examines the material symbols of faith, and Al Madar explores the use of numbers as a link between humanity and the divine order. Al Muqtani pays homage to private collections, while the outdoor spaces ofAl Mathala invite visitors to meditation in the heart of reimagined gardens.
Finally, the exhibition will include pavilions dedicated to the sacred cities of Mecca and Medina, as well as the presentation of the Al Musalla Prize, rewarding a modular and sustainable prayer space. With more than 500 works, including new creations by international artists, the biennial offers a unique dialogue between tradition and modernity, celebrating Islamic heritage in all its richness and relevance.
The Biennale will also highlight around twenty new works by international artists, such as the Saudi Fatma Abdulhadi, the Libyan Nour Jaouda and the Taiwanese Charwei Tsai. These contemporary creations, integrated into thematic spaces, explore deep themes around faith and the sacred, while addressing modern concerns. Each exhibition room and outdoor space is designed to awaken personal reflection in the visitor, while promoting the diversity of artistic expressions in the Islamic world.
