Severe floods hit Saudi Arabia, Mecca particularly affected

Since October 27, 2024, torrential rains have caused severe flooding in several areas of Saudi Arabia, seriously affecting Mecca. The streets of the holy city, including the area around the Grand Mosque, are submerged, causing major disruption for residents and pilgrims.

Local authorities and Saudi civil defense are mobilized to manage the crisis, calling on the population to stay at home and avoid flooded areas. Other regions such as Hail, Qassim, Asir and Jizan expect further rainfall until November 3, increasing the risk of flooding. This extreme weather phenomenon is putting several cities across the country to the test, transforming roads and neighborhoods into veritable rivers.

These exceptional bad weather events highlight the scale of the challenges posed by climate change, with increasingly intense and frequent phenomena, encouraging the country to strengthen its infrastructure to better cope.
