Shi’ite and Sunni Customs

March 7, 2005

Question

What are some shiite and sunni customs? Also, what is the difference between their customs?

Answer

I am not sure what you mean by “custom”. I take it that you mean “religious practices”. Assuming this is right, both groups have similar obligatory religious practices in terms of offering prayers, fasting, Zakah, Hajj and also religious rules with regard to edibles, marriage, rules of transactions, etc. They do have some differences with regard to the details of carrying out these practices. Other than these, Shia Muslims also have some other practices that they consider as religious but not obligatory, among these are mourning for what they believe were infallible Imams (Religious Leaders) and visiting their graves.
