Spain: the halal market attracts 700,000 consumers in Catalonia

In Catalonia, the halal meat market is growing strongly. It is estimated that it concerns around 700,000 consumers. This trend is part of a broader context in Spain, where the Muslim population exceeds two million people. International tourism also contributes to strengthening this demand. Halal is based on precise rules linked to the Muslim religion, particularly for the feeding and slaughter of animals. Today, this market is taking up more and more space in the food industry. Companies are adapting by developing their products both for the local market and for export to Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
The consumer profile is changing. These are often younger people, with greater purchasing power. They are looking for practical products, such as prepared or processed meals. The offer is therefore expanding: in addition to meat, we now find halal products in drinks, dairy products and even ready meals.
Distribution is also evolving. Halal products are increasingly present in supermarkets and supermarkets, and less so only in traditional butchers. Companies rely on certifications to guarantee compliance with halal standards and reassure consumers. This development shows that the halal market is no longer a niche market. It is becoming an important economic sector, driven by a young population and diversified demand. Companies see this as an opportunity for growth, both in Spain and internationally. In the future, this market could further develop, particularly with the increase in processed products and the opening of new export markets.
