Supplication for Blessings in the Life of this World as well as in the Hereafter

October 5, 2001

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord, grant us blessings in the life of this world and blessings in the life to come, and save us from the punishment of the Fire1

Note: The Qur’an says that there are people, who want all the good in the life of this world, but are not concerned with the reward or the punishment of the life hereafter. Such an attitude can only be the result of a lack of true belief in the Hereafter. Thus, even through acts of worship and piety, such people only desire to get an immediate worldly benefit. True believers, on the contrary, ask God to grant them His blessings in the life of this world as well as the Hereafter and to save them from the great punishment of Hellfire. The cited supplication is mentioned in the Qur’an as a supplication of the true believers in the Hereafter, who are not merely interested in the good of the life of this world, but are also interested in the permanent good of the Hereafter.
