The American American-Arab Committee denounces a new “Muslim Ban” in a Trump decree
The American-Arab Anti-discrimination Committee (ADC), the first organization for the defense of civil rights of the Arabs-Americans founded in 1980, reacted strongly against a new presidential decree which it describes as a copy of the controversial “Muslim Ban” of 2017 2017 . Title “Protection of the United States against foreign terrorists and other threats to national security”, this text orders several senior officials, including the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence, to identify countries including the countries including control procedures would be deemed insufficient.
ADC, recognized for its commitment to the fight against discrimination, is particularly concerned with a new provision making it possible to refuse entry or visas on the basis of political opinions, religious beliefs or alleged cultural origins . Even more worrying, the text would authorize the expulsion of legal residents for ideological reasons.
“We cannot let the government erode our first amendment or rekindle the fear and mistrust of after September 11,” alerts the organization, calling Trump to “stop stigmatizing entire communities” at the risk of threatening freedoms fundamental of all Americans.
This new decree is a continuation of Trump’s restrictive migration policy, but with an unprecedented and worrying ideological dimension. By just targeting the origins but also opinions, he crossed a constitutional red line. This authoritarian drift could not only affect the Arab and Muslim communities, already stigmatized, but create a dangerous previous for all foreign residents in the United States.
