The central Glasgow mosque classified as Scottish heritage

The central Glasgow mosque has just obtained the highest level of heritage protection in Scotland. The Historic Environment Scotland (HES) organization has announced its registration in category A, thus recognizing its exceptional architectural and historical value.

The classification includes the main building, its paved courtyard with garden, as well as its surrounding walls and its grids. Only the extension to the southwest, dating from the beginning of the 21st century, is not concerned by this protective measure.

Elizabeth McCrone, heritage director in HES, underlines the double importance of this emblematic place: “The central mosque of Glasgow is both a local distinctive benchmark and a major building, both by its architecture and its role in the historical development of The Scottish Muslim community. ” This decision follows a period of public consultation during which HES collected the comments and information to enrich the understanding of the building and its use.

This classification testifies to the evolution of mentalities in Scotland and the growing recognition of the contribution of Muslim communities to the national cultural heritage. The central mosque, a true spiritual and community crossroads, thus joins the prestigious circle of historic monuments of category A, alongside castles and cathedrals that have shaped Scottish history.
