Tunisia plans to launch its first green hydrogen project in 2030
Tunisia is set to inaugurate its first green hydrogen project in 2030, paving the way for its ambition to become a major exporter of this fuel in Europe, said Wael Shoshan, Secretary of State for Energy Transition at the Ministry of Energy. Industry, Mines and Energy.
During an international conference on hydrogen held in the province of Gabès, Shoshan clarified that studies related to these projects are underway and could be finalized within 2 to 4 years. “These initiatives will offer vast economic prospects and will allow Tunisia to assert itself as a key player in the export of green hydrogen,” he said, quoted by the newspaper Alshuruq.
Tunisia has already signed agreements with foreign partners, including ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia) and Total Energies (France), as part of a strategy to produce more than 8 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2050.
This initiative represents a strategic opportunity for Tunisia to diversify its economy and reduce its energy dependence. With the increase in European demand for renewable energies and carbon-free solutions, this project could position the country as a key player in the global energy transition. However, the success of this initiative will rely on the country’s ability to attract investments, develop the necessary infrastructure and guarantee a stable and attractive regulatory framework for foreign investors.
