Turkey calls on Muslim world to impose arms embargo on Israel
At an extraordinary summit in Riyadh bringing together foreign ministers from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on Muslim countries to step up their efforts to impose an arms embargo against Israel. Fidan recalled that 52 nations, including permanent members of the UN Security Council, support this initiative. He stressed the need for a unified response to end the ongoing genocide in Gaza and discussed actions such as suspending trade with Israel and UN support for Palestinian refugees.
During this crisis meeting, Hakan Fidan denounced the role of Western countries, which he accused of tacitly supporting Israeli policy in Palestine. The minister spoke of the “war crimes” committed in Gaza and insisted on the need for the Islamic community to act in solidarity to impose strong sanctions. He also warned of possible regional escalation, saying that only coordinated action would make it possible to effectively respond to the violence and protect Palestinian civilians.
Summit participants also discussed strengthening humanitarian aid and creating an international mechanism to monitor the situation on the ground. Turkey has proposed the establishment of an international conference to initiate a lasting peace process, with security guarantees for the Palestinian population. In 2025, Turkey will take over the rotating presidency of the OIC, strengthening its capacity to carry out diplomatic actions in favor of the Palestinian cause.
