UK: First Imams’ Football Tournament for Gaza

More than 25,000 euros is the tidy sum that a unique charity football tournament, under the aegis of Muslim Aid and in the colours of Palestine, has managed to collect on the English pitch. And that is not the least of its exploits…

Indeed, in addition to the fervour it aroused in the stands, the first Minarets Cup, entirely dedicated to the suffering population of Gaza, brought together on the pitch football enthusiasts who were not expected to lace up their boots for a good cause of absolute humanitarian urgency: imams, joined by leaders of Islamic associations, Muslim scholars and academics.

Coming from all over the British kingdom, these unexpected footballers, some from Sunday camps, others more experienced, all rushed to respond to the call launched by Muslim Aid and the East London Mosque, ready to get their jerseys wet for Palestine Appeal.

In front of more than 250 enthusiastic supporters who got excited for this anthology match, waving Palestinian flags with renewed ardor at each of their plays, the Imams All-Stars won against Imams United by eight goals to three. But in the end, everyone won at the beginning of September, in the London district of Tower Hamlets, on the green lawn of solidarity with the martyred enclave of Gaza. With, moreover, the gratifying feeling of duty accomplished.

More than €25,000 has been donated to Palestine Appeal, whose dedicated members are working tirelessly to provide essential aid to the suffering people of Gaza, including food, water and medicine.

A fundraising that exceeded the expectations of Farhal Ahmed, the head of donation appeals at Muslim Aid: ” It was so inspiring to see Imams from all over the country flocking here to actively, fully participate in this remarkable initiative. This unifying, cross-generational event brought together communities here in the UK to support the people of Gaza. The funds raised will go towards providing vital aid ” he confided, visibly very touched.

The first Minarets Cup, which both players and spectators will remember forever and hope will be the prelude to others, ended with an emotional trophy presentation ceremony during which Sheikh Khidr delivered a Nasihah (Islamic counseling session).
